Liberty and Character | Lawrence W. Reed
"People are focused today on some trees, but are missing the forest."
FEE President, Lawrence W. Reed, addresses the connection between Liberty and Character.

June 17, 2011 marks the 40th Anniversary of Nixons' War on Drugs. Ever wonder what it costs and if it's worth it?

"That's like putting almost everyone in Hawaii and Alaska in prison."

Sheldon Richman once wrote "For years advocates of free trade in drugs—that is, basic rights to life, liberty, and property for drug consumers, producers, and merchants—have pointed out that prohibition, in addition to being an immoral invasion of liberty by the State, sets in motion a variety of concrete evils that harm innocent people. These evils include the corruption of law enforcement, violent crime, and the expansion of intrusive government. Besides these domestic evils, the U.S. government has alienated farmers in foreign lands by helping to destroy their crops and livelihoods. If that’s not terrorism, nothing is."

These numbers are sooo skewed!  I guarantee you 13% arrested would be still arrested for something else if drugs were legal! The 95,000 convicted of drug crimes would more then likely be convicted of some other crime if drugs were legal!   The 15 Billion spent would more then likely still be spent by cops and used to fight the “War on Murder” or the “War on Stealing” or the “War on Aggravated Assault” ETC… I am sure I can continue! IT SOUNDS GOOD! BUT… not very plausible in reality!!!

In that case Stephen, if you think law enforcement expenditures would remain the same, would you agree that the money spent prosecuting victimless crimes such as drug use would be better spent on stopping theft, rape, murder, and other coercive abuse?

What decisions in American history did not appear to be very important at the time, but had absolutely terrible consequences for the nation?…

The War on Drugs We incarcerate more people per capita than any country in the world, and many are put in jail for simply using drugs. Imagine if we jailed everyone who drank. We’d have no one to run the country. It’s mostly a waste of money that has…

This is crazy!!! im cool with them legalizing marijuana but if we legalize drugs in general (which will never happen) it would be chaos. Imagine people freely doing mushrooms,lsd,cocaine,heroin,mar4,bath salts, meth, and god knows what else. People that make videos like this should think first.

You should have made it about marijuana and not drugs all around, very stupid.

Sounds good to me, Stephen.  Let's stop wasting money the "War on Drugs" and start spending it convict real criminals of real crimes.
j/k
The WORST part of the "War on Drugs" is that it is not a War on Drugs, it's a war on sick people seeking relief that doesn't come in the form of a man made pill that lists DEATH as a side effect.  It's also a War on Future Leaders after all when is the last time we had President who HONESTLY denied ever using drugs.  It's also a War on Students & Young People, after all it's that who most of us think of when we think of a "Stoner".
IT'S NOT A WAR ON DRUGS, IT'S A WAR ON PEOPLE, you, your brothers, your sisters, your kids, cancer patients, those suffering from chronic pain & illness.  Stop this War, and start putting these wasted resources to use helping the hurting, stopping violent crime as well as other things that improve our world.
